Frequently Asked Questions – Weekday Hikes
What happens on a typical Outdoor Hounds hike?
Your dog is picked up from your home, taken on a small‑group hike with other compatible dogs, and walked on local bush and park trails. There’s time for sniffing, exploring, training reinforcement and rest breaks, then we towel them off (if needed) and return them home tired and happy.
Is it safe for my dog to go on group hikes?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. We only group dogs that are friendly and well‑socialised, we use secure equipment, and we carefully choose trails away from busy roads. New dogs are always assessed first, and we monitor the group closely throughout the hike.
What’s included in the price?
Each hike includes home pick‑up and drop‑off, transport to the trail, a structured walk (between 1-3hrs on the ground depending on the hike option you choose), fresh water, basic towel‑off if they get muddy, and regular photo updates so you can see how much fun they’re having.
How many dogs are in each group?
We keep groups deliberately small so every dog gets attention and supervision. Typically there are 3‑6 dogs per hike, matched by size, energy level and temperament. We have the same groups per week, so the dogs all become familiar with each other and it really is like their own pack excursion!
What kind of dogs are suitable for Outdoor Hounds hikes?
Our hikes are ideal for friendly, social dogs who enjoy being outdoors and can comfortably walk for at least an hour. Your dog should be up‑to‑date on vaccinations, on a regular flea/tick/worming program, and able to walk nicely on a lead around other dogs and people.
Do you take puppies or senior dogs?
Yes, in the right circumstances. Puppies must have completed their vaccinations and be able to handle a shorter, gentler outing. Senior dogs are welcome on slower, lower‑intensity walks – we’ll discuss your dog’s needs and adjust the pace or recommend a different service if needed.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans change. Cancellations made more than 24 hours before your scheduled hike can be rescheduled at no charge. Cancellations made within 24 hours may be charged in full, as your dog’s spot has been reserved.
How do I book a hike for my dog?
You can book by using our Contact page, or emailing us at contact@outdoorhounds.com. We’ll ask a few questions about your dog, organise a meet‑and‑greet & an assessment hike, and go from there!
Weekend Hikes
What happens on a typical Weekend Hike with Humans?
Our weekend hikes are relaxed, guided group walks on scenic local trails for both dogs and their humans. An Outdoor Hounds hike leader plans the route, sets a comfortable pace, and builds in plenty of stops for water, photos, and sniffing time so everyone can enjoy the experience together.
What’s included in the price?
Each weekend hike includes a guided group walk, route planning, safety checks, and support from an experienced hike leader. We provide basic canine first-aid supplies, extra poo bags, and recommendations for managing your dog on the trail. Humans are responsible for their own transport, snacks, and water.
How fit do humans and dogs need to be?
Weekend hikes are designed for reasonably active humans and dogs who can comfortably walk for 1–3 hours with breaks. You don’t need to be a hardcore bushwalker, but you should be okay with gentle hills and uneven ground. If you’re unsure, we can suggest an easier route for your first outing.
How many people and dogs are in each group?
Group sizes vary by trail, with a maximum of 10–20 attendees; keeping the outing safe & social for everyone.
What should I bring on a weekend hike?
For humans: comfortable, closed‑toe walking shoes, weather‑appropriate clothing, a filled water bottle, sunscreen/hat, and any personal medication or snacks.
For dogs: a secure collar or harness, sturdy lead or longline (no retractable leads, please), poo bags, any regular medication, and treats.
Is it safe for dogs and humans on the trail?
Yes–safety is our top priority. We choose suitable routes for the group, avoid hazardous areas, and follow local rules on lead use. We watch dogs and humans for signs of fatigue or stress and adjust the pace or route if needed. We also carry a basic canine first‑aid kit and a charged phone in case of emergencies.
Can puppies or senior dogs join weekend hikes with humans?
Puppies and senior dogs are welcome on shorter, easier routes, as long as they are healthy and cleared for gentle exercise by your vet. Let us know your dog’s age, health, and any mobility issues when you book so we can recommend the right hike.
What is your cancellation policy for weekend hikes?
Because group sizes are limited, cancellations made more than 48 hours before your hike can usually be rescheduled or refunded. Cancellations within 48 hours may be charged in full, as your spot has been reserved for you and your dog.
